3M Novec 1702 Electronic Grade Coating Product Analysis

Product Overview

3M Novec 1702 Electronic Grade Coating is a single-component fluorinated polymer solution based on 3M Novec 7100DL Engineered Fluid. As a low-solids version of the 1700 coating series, it forms an exceptionally thin protective film after drying, specifically engineered for low-clearance electronic components. This product delivers reliable moisture and corrosion protection for printed circuit boards and electronic assemblies, creating an ultra-thin transparent coating with superior hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristics. The coating requires no curing process, features straightforward application, and demonstrates outstanding properties including non-flammability, zero ozone depletion potential, low toxicity, low global warming potential, RoHS compliance, and U.S. EPA VOC exemption status.

Physicochemical Properties Analysis

1.Optimized Application Parameters

Novec 1702 exhibits a density of 1.5 g/ml (@23°C), a boiling point of 61°C, and no flash point, ensuring maximum safety during storage and processing. The exceptionally low viscosity makes it particularly suitable for precision application methods including dipping, brushing, and selective dispensing, with handling capability achieved within two minutes at ambient temperature.

2.Exceptional Nanoscale Film Performance

The cured coating maintains thickness below 100 nanometers while providing perfect optical transparency. Static contact angles measure 105° (water) and 65° (hexadecane), demonstrating excellent dual-phobic properties. The coating displays remarkable thermal stability, maintaining performance integrity after 24 hours at 175°C, with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 44°C. Electrical properties include a dielectric constant of 3.2 (@1kHz), dissipation factor of 0.002, and dielectric strength of 2000 V/mil, ensuring reliable insulation performance for high-density electronic circuits.

Application Performance and Solutions

Advanced Precision Electronics Protection

Novec 1702 is specifically formulated to address the challenges of electronic miniaturization trends. Its ultra-thin characteristics make it an ideal protective solution for high-density PCB assemblies and micro-components. The coating provides effective protection against moisture, chemical vapor corrosion, and ion migration while enabling direct solder-through rework capability, significantly enhancing manufacturing process flexibility.

Broad Industrial Application Versatility

The coating is suitable for display anti-migration applications, spindle motor lubrication zone protection, and corrosion prevention for various materials. Its excellent adhesion to multiple substrates including metals, glass, ceramics, polymers, and composite materials positions it as an advanced alternative to traditional conformal coatings.

Technical Advantages and Process Benefits

Unmatched Precision Coverage Capability

The combination of ultra-low viscosity, minimal surface tension, and nanoscale film thickness enables the 1702 coating to achieve perfect coverage in the most demanding electronic component configurations. Its superior penetration ensures complete protection in challenging micro-pitch areas, establishing new benchmarks for product reliability.

Enhanced Process Efficiency and Repairability

The coating's rapid ambient-temperature drying significantly improves manufacturing throughput, while the solder-through rework capability provides unprecedented flexibility for high-value electronic assembly maintenance. When complete removal is required, the coating can be efficiently dissolved using 3M™ Novec™ 72DA (preferred) or 7100DL Engineered Fluid.
