Product Overview

3M Novec 2708 Electronic Grade Coating is a high-solids, single-component fluorinated polymer solution based on 3M  Novec  7200 Engineered Fluid, with less than 5% PGMEA. This product incorporates the UV-fluorescent detection feature characteristic of the Novec electronic coating series, containing a built-in yellow-orange dye that emits clear fluorescence under UV light, greatly facilitating coating coverage inspection and process quality control. Designed to provide long-lasting moisture and corrosion protection for printed circuit boards and electronic components, it dries to form a transparent, ultra-thin protective film with excellent hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The coating requires no curing, offers easy application, and maintains strong environmental credentials including non-flammability, zero ozone depletion potential, low toxicity, low global warming potential, RoHS compliance, and low VOC content.

Physicochemical Properties Analysis

1.Optimized High-Solids Fluid Characteristics

Novec 2708 has a density of 1.4 g/ml (@23°C), a boiling point of 79°C, and no flash point as tested by the closed-cup method, ensuring safe storage and use. With a viscosity of 4.9 cP, it is suitable for dip, brush, and selective dispensing processes. The coating achieves handling capability within two minutes at room temperature, supporting efficient continuous production.

 

2.Exceptional Dry Film Performance

The cured coating demonstrates excellent thermal stability, maintaining protective performance after 24 hours at 175°C, and has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 53°C. Static contact angles are 105° (water) and 65° (hexadecane), confirming outstanding dual-phobic properties. Electrically, it offers a dielectric constant of 3.2 (@1kHz), a dissipation factor of 0.001, and a high dielectric strength of 2500 V/mil, providing reliable insulation for high-reliability electronic devices.

It also supports solder-through rework, maintaining flexibility during both manufacturing and repair stages. It exhibits good adhesion to a variety of substrates including metals, glass, ceramics, plastics, and composite materials.

For rework, it can be dissolved and removed using Novec 72DA (preferred) or 7200 Engineered Fluid.
