3M Novec 1904 Electronic Grade Coating Product Analysis

Product Overview

3M Novec 1904 Electronic Grade Coating is a single-component fluorinated polymer solution utilizing a blended solvent system of 3M Novec 7100 and 7200 Engineered Fluids, characterized by low viscosity and low surface tension. Designed to provide reliable moisture and corrosion protection for printed circuit boards and electronic components, it dries to form an ultra-thin, transparent protective film with excellent hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The coating requires no curing, offers easy application, and maintains outstanding environmental and safety credentials, including non-flammability, zero ozone depletion potential, low toxicity, low global warming potential, RoHS compliance, and full U.S. EPA VOC exemption.

Physicochemical Properties Analysis

1.Balanced Fluid and Process Parameters

Novec 1904 has a density of 1.43 g/ml (@23°C), a boiling point of 71°C, and no flash point, ensuring safety throughout storage and application. A viscosity of 1.11 cP makes it perfectly suited for various processes including spray, dip, brush, and selective dispensing, achieving handling capability within two minutes at room temperature and supporting efficient continuous production.

2.Stable and Reliable Dry Film Performance

The cured coating exhibits good thermal stability, maintaining its properties after 24 hours at 175°C, and has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 44.5°C. Static contact angles of 105° (water) and 65° (hexadecane) confirm excellent dual-phobic characteristics. Electrically, it offers a dielectric constant of 3.2 (@1kHz), a dissipation factor of 0.002, and a dielectric strength of 2000 V/mil, providing reliable insulation for various electronic circuits.

Application Performance and Solutions

Suited for Medium-Protection-Thickness Electronics Manufacturing

With its practical film thickness range of 0.5–6.0 microns, Novec 1904 is an ideal choice for PCB assemblies in consumer electronics, industrial controls, and automotive electronics that require a certain thickness to enhance environmental endurance. Its high transparency ensures no interference with subsequent optical inspection or visual checks.

Excellent Process Compatibility and Repairability

The coating is compatible with various application methods including spray, dip, brush, and selective dispensing, and can be diluted with Novec 7200 Engineered Fluid to optimize process parameters. For rework, the coating can be conveniently dissolved and removed using Novec 72DA (preferred) or 7200 Engineered Fluid, ensuring flexibility in both production and repair stages.

Technical Advantages and Process Benefits

Optimized Balance Between Performance, Cost, and Process Efficiency

The 1904 coating achieves an optimized integration of moderate solids content, good film-forming performance, and top-tier environmental attributes. It provides reliable protective capability while maintaining excellent application convenience and production efficiency, resulting in a competitive total cost of ownership.

Supports Stable and Reliable Continuous Production

Its stable formulation system and rapid touch-dry feature help reduce waiting times in the production process, enhancing overall line throughput. A wide process window and good material compatibility further reduce the complexity of production implementation and maintenance.
