3M Novec 1908 Electronic Grade Coating Product Analysis
Product Overview
3M Novec 1908 Electronic Grade Coating is a single-component fluorinated polymer solution utilizing a blended solvent system of 3M Novec 7100 and 7200 Engineered Fluids, delivering low viscosity and low surface tension. Designed to provide reliable moisture and corrosion protection for printed circuit boards and electronic components, it dries to form an ultra-thin, transparent protective film with excellent hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The coating requires no curing, offers easy application, and maintains outstanding environmental and safety credentials, including non-flammability, zero ozone depletion potential, low toxicity, low global warming potential, RoHS compliance, and full U.S. EPA VOC exemption.
Physicochemical Properties Analysis
1.Well-Balanced Fluid and Application Characteristics
Novec 1908 has a density of 1.44 g/ml (@23°C), a boiling point of 75°C, and no flash point, ensuring safe storage and handling. With a viscosity of 2.2 cP, it is suitable for dip, brush, and selective dispensing processes, achieving handling capability within two minutes at room temperature and supporting efficient continuous production.
2.Stable and Reliable Dry Film Performance
The cured coating exhibits good thermal stability, maintaining its properties after 24 hours at 175°C, and has a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 44.5°C. Static contact angles of 105° (water) and 65° (hexadecane) confirm excellent dual-phobic characteristics. Electrically, it offers a dielectric constant of 3.2 (@1kHz), a dissipation factor of 0.002, and a dielectric strength of 2000 V/mil, meeting general electronic insulation and protection requirements.
Application Performance and Solutions
Suited for Moderate-Thickness Electronic Protection
With its film thickness range of 0.4–5.0 microns, Novec 1908 is an ideal choice for electronic assemblies requiring enhanced barrier protection through moderate coating thickness. Its excellent transparency ensures no interference with subsequent optical inspection or visual checks.
Comprehensive Process Compatibility and Repairability
The coating is compatible with various application methods including dip, brush, and selective dispensing, and can be diluted with Novec 7200 Engineered Fluid to adjust process parameters. For rework, the coating can be conveniently dissolved and removed using Novec 72DA (preferred) or 7200 Engineered Fluid, maintaining flexibility in both production and repair stages.
Technical Advantages and Process Benefits
Optimal Balance Between Performance, Process, and Environmental Goals
The 1908 coating achieves an optimized equilibrium among relatively high solids content, excellent application properties, and top-tier environmental attributes. It meets reliable protection requirements while simultaneously supporting production convenience and sustainable manufacturing objectives.
Provides a Stable and Reliable Coating Solution for Continuous Production
Its stable formulation system and extended bath life (with proper maintenance) help minimize production interruptions and improve overall equipment operational efficiency. The rapid touch-dry feature further accelerates production throughput.
